Voluntary global alliance to tackle COVID-19’s medium and long-term adverse impacts towards agri-food systems transformation

The Prime Minister of Italy, two Nobel Laureates and a number of ministers will join FAO for the presentation of the Food Coalition, a new global alliance to help countries cope with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their food systems and agriculture sectors. The Food Coalition was suggested by the Government of Italy and is led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The Virtual High-Level Launch event<http://www.fao.org/about/meetings/hle-food-coalition/en/> will feature the participation of FAO Director-General QU Dongyu, Prime Minister of Italy Giuseppe Conte, Deputy Prime Minister Carola Schouten of the Netherlands, several agriculture ministers and ambassadors, and a keynote speech by Tawakkol Karman, winner of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, as well as an intervention by Muhammad Yunus, winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

.

The event will be held 5 November at 12:30 Rome time on (CET). FAO will webcast<http://www.fao.org/webcast/home/en/> the proceedings.

The Food Coalition will activate and mobilize resources and technical expertise for a unified global action on COVID-19, aiming to help countries get back on track to meet Sustainable Development Goal #2, the eradication of hunger by 2030.

The Food Coalition is complimentary to and will support the implementation of FAO’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Programme<http://www.fao.org/partnerships/resource-partners/covid-19/en/> as well as the Hand-in-Hand Initiative<http://www.fao.org/hand-in-hand/en/>.

Using a “network of networks” approach it will enable faster and better-targeted ways to match resources and expertise to projects where they can have the biggest impact on the ground at the country level.

To date, more than 30 countries have expressed support for the Food Coalition, including many members of the G-20, which Italy will preside over in 2021.
