Rome’s new “G20 Green Garden” to showcase SDGs

Opening ceremony – Valle della Caffarella, Rome

10 June 2021,11.30 am (10:30 CET)

Designed in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Rome’s latest public garden will mark Italy’s Presidency of the G20 and the joint commitment to a greener, fairer, more secure future for all.

The Garden – an open-air gallery within the Parco dell’Appia Antica – will be landscaped around an installation dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Planned to grow over time, it will be planted in stages through 2021 – a serene space for Romans and visitors to reflect on vital themes for people and planet.

The opening ceremony will feature interventions by the FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu; the President of the Regione Lazio, Nicola Zingaretti; and the Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi.

The event ties into FAO’s Green Cities Initiative for food security across the urban-rural divide.

Access and practical details

Entrance for accredited journalists is through Vicolo di S. Urbano on Via Appia Pignatelli. The Garden opens to the public a day later, on Friday 11 June.

Video material will be available through the FAO website –journalists are invited to arrange any further interviews bilaterally. There may also be ad-hoc opportunities, depending on participants’ schedule.

This joint project has been developed thanks to a collaboration between FAO and Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Ministry of Education; Ministry of Culture; Regione Lazio; Comune di Roma; Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica; and Parco Regionale dell’Appia Antica.
