Colombia President Santos, Nobel laurate, visits FAO

Juan Manuel Santos highlights rural development's contribution to peace

President Juan Manuel Santos will visit FAO's headquarters on Thursday 15 December 2016, meeting with the FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva and Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development. The visit will begin at 17:30 Rome time.
President Santos was awarded the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution to ending Colombia's 50-year-long civil war. FAO and the European Commission are key supporters of rural development plans designed to foster rural and national peace in the wake of the conflict.
On ThursdayPresident Santos will sign agreements intensifying the joint effort to foster food security in rural Colombia.
At 18:00, Santos, Graziano da Silva, Mimica will all address an audience comprising Permanent Representatives to FAO.
Representatives from Cuba and Norway, whose governments played key roles in the negotiations that led to Colombia's peace agreement, will also speak at the event.
Tawakkol Karman, a journalist and human rights activist from Yemen and winner of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, will offer remarks on hunger and conflict, and invite President Santos to join the Alliance for Food Security and Peace, a FAO-sponsored consortium of Nobel Laureates.
After the event, President Santos and Graziano da Silva will briefly meet the press in FAO's main entry hall.
FAO's role in implementing peace agreements in Colombia
In August 2016 the government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia asked FAO to collaborate in the implementation of peace agreements aimed at fighting hunger and promoting rural reforms and development. The multifaceted approach ranges from a land redistribution scheme for untenured peasants to measures that can rapidly boost agricultural productivity and boost local nutrition.
