FAO launches the One Country One Priority Product Global Action

High-level virtual launch event on 7 September 2021

On Tuesday, 7 September 2021, 13:00 - 14:30 (CET), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will launch the One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) Global Action to promote Green Development of Special Agricultural Products.

Today, global food supplies increasingly depend on just a few crops and products, and most agricultural production systems still make intensive use of agricultural inputs and natural resources. This Global Action will address these challenges through the sustainable development of Special Agricultural Products (SAPs) across Members. These products are recognized as unique in terms of national or cultural heritage, flavour or nutritional content, unique methods of producing or processing, and have potential as attractive to domestic and international markets.

The Global Action aims to boost the food value chains of SAPs by making them more inclusive, profitable and environmentally sustainable through green development. The integration of sustainable innovations and technologies can bring about resilience and growth, ensuring that SAPs fulfil their unmet potential to improve food security and livelihoods and hasten the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On Tuesday, 7 September, 13:00 – 14:30 (CET) FAO will hold a virtual launch event for the Global Action with participation from FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and Deputy-Director General Beth Bechdol, who will be joined by:

- Levan Davitashvili, Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia,
- Chalermchai Sri-orn, Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand,
- Moisés Santiago Bertoni, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock of Paraguay,
- Clémentine Ananga Messina, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cameroon,
- Alexandra Valkenburg, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the European Union to FAO,
- Other speakers to be confirmed.
