Agriculture is being transformed with digital technologies, offering ubiquity, portability and mobility through smartphones, the Internet of Things and cloud-based services, as well as smart and prediction technology, driven by analytics and artificial intelligence, and interconnected data-driven systems such as blockchain.
How this world of innovation can be harnessed to the benefit of smallholders, particularly those in developing countries, will be the focus of a seminar at FAO on Wednesday 12 June and Thursday 13 June.
The seminar which is open to the media will be opened by FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva
Participants include senior officers from the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Bank, the European Commission, officials representing the governments of China, India, Japan, Kenya, Switzerland, the United States of America and representatives of private-sector actors such as Alibaba, Google KT, Mastercard, Tata and Telefónica as well as from civil society.
State of the art
FAO will launch a report on "Digital Technologies in Agriculture and Rural Areas: State of the Art", which serves as a framework document to leverage agriculture through digitalization in rural areas including digital inclusion, labour and education, data and cybersecurity, and related themes.
