Global Symposium on Soils for Nutrition

Virtual event to begin on 26 July at 13:00 CEST

About 95 percent of our food comes from soils, which have a natural capacity to support the growth of plants by providing them with nutrients.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is co‑organizing a Global Symposium on Soils for Nutrition - “Soils, where food begins” which will bring science and policy together to review the status and challenges of soil fertility in relation to crop, animal and human nutrition.

The event will be held in a virtual format from 26 to 29 July 2022.

FAO’s Global Soil Partnership, the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils, and the International Network on Fertilizers Analysis are co‑organising the Symposium.

The main objective of the Symposium is to review the state of knowledge on the role of soil fertility in delivering sufficient, high-quality, safe, and more nutritious food for better nourished people, animals and plants.

The Symposium is also expected to identify critical knowledge gaps and provide the basis for discussion among policymakers, food producers, scientists, the fertilizer industry, practitioners, and other stakeholders on the creation of solutions that can provide more nutritious agrifood systems for enhanced human health and wellbeing while protecting the environment.

FAO Director-General QU Dongyu will address the opening of the Global Symposium on Soils for Nutrition.

Participants will include international organizations, scientists and practitioners, NGOs, civil society, land users and indigenous peoples, as well as local communities, and industry and private sector representatives. Leading experts will deliver keynote presentations.

The opening session will be webcast from 13:00 (CEST) here<http://www.fao.org/webcast/home/en/item/5918/icode/>. Journalists can also follow the event on Zoom by registering here<https://fao.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_n0Jwk15KTLWOTBU_Q8uGIA>.

FAO experts will be available for interviews. For more information contact: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
