Special Event: Port State Measures Agreement to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing
Recognition for the parties that have signed landmark treaty
FAO will host a special event on Monday, July 11 at 14:30 pm to celebrate the entry into force of the Port State Measures Agreement to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The treaty process, begun by FAO in 2009, culminated when 25 signatories adhered to the Agreement, which went into effect on June 5. More than 30 countries, as well as the European Union on behalf of its 28 member states, are already parties to the PSMA, the world's first ever binding international treaty specifically targeting IUU fishing.
IUU fishing poses a serious threat to the effective conservation and management of marine resources and could lead to the collapse of some fish stocks. The PSMA greatly enhances existing flag state efforts that ask governments to control the practices of their own fishing fleets.
It requires all vessels using a foreign port to notify local authorities of their arrival and what they have caught, while allowing inspections and showing they have necessary permissions. Coupled with information-sharing protocols for rogue vessels, this will make it much harder for pirate fishers to sell their catch. An estimated $23 billion in fish from IUU fishing activities is sold each year.
Fish are for the world's largest traded food category by value and offer substantial revenue opportunities for the world's developing countries, which account for more than half of global fish exports.
