Launch of the 2022 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report

6 July 2022, Launch Event and Media Briefing 10:00 – 12:00 (EDT)

The number of people affected by hunger is continuing to rise, in fresh evidence that the world is moving further away from its goal of ending hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 (SOFI 2022) report provides updates on the food security and nutrition situation around the world, including the latest estimates on the cost and affordability of healthy diets. Mindful of the limited public resources available in many parts of the world, the report also looks at ways in which governments can repurpose their current support to agriculture to reduce the cost of nutritious and sustainable foods.

This year’s report, which is jointly produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), will present:

• Updated global hunger numbers.
• An analysis of the implications of the impact of the war in Ukraine and COVID-19 on food security.
• Details on the widening food security gender gap.
• Updated estimates on the cost and affordability of a healthy diet.
• Policy recommendations on repurposing food and agricultural support to target nutritious foods.

The launch of the report will take the form of a virtual and in-person event on 6 July 2022, from 10.00 (EDT) in New York (16.00 CET).

The event will feature presentations from:

• QU Dongyu, Director-General, FAO
• Gilbert F. Houngbo, President, IFAD
• Catherine Russell, Executive Director, UNICEF
• David Beasley, Executive Director, WFP
• Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, WHO
• Máximo Torero Cullen, Chief Economist, FAO

Previous editions of the SOFI report are available here<http://www.fao.org/publications/sofi/en/>.

It will also be webcast on the FAO website<https://www.fao.org/webcast/home/en/> and on UN Web TV<https://media.un.org/en/webtv/>.

Journalists may also request one-on-one interviews with FAO experts either in advance under embargo or on the day.
