MEDIA ADVISORY
FAO at the UN General Assembly in New York
22-28 September 2018
Eradicating hunger and ensuring food security are critical components for peace and stability in the world, yet over 820 million people are chronically undernourished and the numbers are growing. At the same time, an unprecedented rise in obesity rates shows that feeding the world is not enough, but that we must transform food systems so that people have access to healthy diets.
At the UN General Assembly, FAO will stress the urgent need to bring achieving Zero Hunger back on track. This requires partnerships that boost investments in rural development to support small-scale family farmers, especially women and youth, tackle some of the root causes that force people to migrate, and address the impacts of climate change.
The FAO delegation, led by Director-General José Graziano da Silva and Deputy Director-General for Climate and Natural Resources, Maria Helena Semedo, will participate in a series of UN General Assembly events to highlight these and other issues.
This includes:
· The launch of a European Union-FAO partnership aimed at boosting the resilience of millions of people struggling with severe and often prolonged or recurrent food crises around the world. (25 September, 18:00-18:30 EST)
· An event focusing on "Breaking the Cycle between Conflict and Hunger" organized by FAO together with the other Rome-based UN agencies, the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Food Programme. (25 September, 18:30-20:00 EST)
· An African Union-FAO event titled "Leaving no-one behind: Empowering Africa's Rural women for Zero Hunger and shared prosperity." (26 September, 16:00-17:30 EST)
· A ceremony to bestow the late South African president Nelson Mandela with a Honorary Award as Member of FAO-Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Alliance. The award will be accepted by Her Excellency Graça Machel. (24 September, 10:30-11: EST)
