MEDIA ADVISORY
Meeting of the Parties to the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures

3-6 June 2019, Santiago, Chile

Around 150 delegates from States all across the world, as well as inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, will gather in Santiago, Chile, for the second Meeting of the Parties to the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA).

The PSMA, which entered into force in 2016, is the first binding international agreement to specifically target illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU fishing). The Meeting will address key issues regarding the implementation of the Agreement, the development of an information exchange system, and the requirements of developing States.
The Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism of Chile, José Ramon Valente, and FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva will open the meeting.

Media are invited to attend the opening of the Meeting on 3 June 2019 from 09h00-10h30 (13h00-14h30 GMT) at the Hotel Crowne Plaza, Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins 192, Santiago, Chile.
IUU fishing is globally estimated to be responsible for annual catches of up to 26 million tonnes of fish - with a value possibly reaching $23 billion - and is a major threat not only to the sustainability of fisheries resources but also to marine ecosystems in general, undermining the sustainable management of fisheries and marine resources.
IUU fishing also threatens the livelihoods of legitimate fishers, including small-scale fishers, and with it their own food security.
The PSMA aims to combat IUU fishing by denying foreign vessels which engaged in IUU fishing, or activities supporting such fishing, from using ports and landing their catches. To date, 59 States and the European Union, on behalf of all its 28 Member States, are already Party to the Agreement<http://www.fao.org/port-state-measures/background/parties-psma/en/>, and several others have committed to implementing the Agreement and becoming a Party shortly.
More information on the programme is available here<http://www.fao.org/3/mz274/mz274.pdf>.
