“Can we feed the world?”
Seminar with Sir Gordon Conway and the Rome-based UN food agencies
On 27 February, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) will host a seminar with Sir Gordon Conway, renowned professor of international development and author of the recently-published book One Billion Hungry: Can we feed the world?<http://canwefeedtheworld.wordpress.com/test/>
Conway’s book looks at the many interrelated issues critical to global food supply, from the science of agricultural advances to the politics of food security, and seeks to answer pressing questions such as:
· How we will feed a growing global population in the face of a wide range of adverse factors, including climate change?
· What contributions can the social and natural sciences make in finding solutions?
· How can we engage both government and the private sector to apply these solutions and achieve significant impact in the lives of the poor?
Following a presentation by Conway of the book’s key messages and findings, the heads of FAO, IFAD and WFP, José Graziano da Silva, Kanayo F. Nwanze and Ertharin Cousin will make brief remarks followed by a Q&A session.
