Leaders to gather in The Hague on global action for ocean health and food security

April 15, 2014--Journalists are invited to attend the Global Oceans Action Summit for Food Security and Blue Growth from Tuesday April 22 at 09.30 a.m. at the World Forum Conference Center, The Hague, the Netherlands. The Summit will culminate in a High Level Roundtable on Thursday April 24 with more than 60 ministers, CEOs and leaders from civil society participating.

The Global Oceans Action Summit brings together ministers, oceans and food security specialists, philanthropists and private sector players to identify an action agenda and implementation mechanisms to address the threats facing the world’s oceans. Over 500 participants are expected to attend.

The opening day will feature keynote addresses from H.E. Sharon Dijksma - Minister for Agriculture of The Netherlands; World Bank President Jim Yong Kim (via video);  Mr. Arni M. Mathiesen, Assistant Director-General, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); H.E Syraif Cicip Sutardjo, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Indonesia; and Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg – a key author of the oceans chapter of the recently released Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.



A panel  representing the diversity of ocean issues and solutions – led by BBC anchor Zeinab Badawi – will set the stage for the Summit.



A media conference at 12.30pm will immediately follow.



The High Level Roundtable on Thursday 24 April will feature keynote speeches by Ms. Maria Damanaki, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Prime-Minister of Grenada, H.E. dr. Keith Mitchell, and H.E. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, Minister for Environment and Water, United Arab Emirates among others.

Media facilities will be available at the Conference Center for the entire week: 22-25 April.
