Committee on Forestry to take place from 3 to 7 October
FAO will release two key reports during COFO week
The 26th session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO) will take place in hybrid format from 3 to 7 October 2022 at FAO HQ in Rome. COFO is the highest FAO Forestry statutory body. QU Dongyu, the FAO Director-General, will address the opening ceremony on 3 October 2022, from 09.30-1030 (CEST). HRH Princess Basma bint Ali of Jordan, FAO Goodwill Ambassador for Near East and North Africa, Cécile Ndjebet, founder of the African Women’s Network for Community Management of Forests and the winner of the Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award 2022, and Analí Bustos, XV World Forestry Congress Youth Forest Change-makers winner, will also speak at the opening. The webcast can be viewed here<https://foris.fao.org/cofo/programme/COFO_26/session/6318531cb42e97673635c8db>.
Two key reports will be released during the week.
- The Global Forest Sector Outlook 2050: Assessing Future Demand and Sources of Timber for a Sustainable Economy will be launched during the meeting on sustainable wood and non-wood forest products – pathways to carbon-neutral and resilient bioeconomies on 4 October from 12.45-14.15 (CEST) and the presentation will be webcast here<https://foris.fao.org/cofo/programme/COFO_26/session/63186b57b42e97673635c8f1>.
- Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Forestry will be presented on 6 October from 08.15-09.45 (CEST) and can be followed via webcast here<https://foris.fao.org/cofo/programme/COFO_26/session/6319f0d06bd3657722ee9ae7>.
COFO sessions are held every two years at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. They bring together heads of forest services and other senior government officials to identify emerging policy and technical issues, to seek solutions and to advise FAO and others on appropriate action.
COFO26 will focus on:
• the contributions of forests to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals;
• ways in which forests and forestry can contribute to FAO’s new Strategic Framework 2022-31 and the Four Betters that frame it: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life;
• the outcomes of the XV World Forestry Congress held in May in the Republic of Korea.
The 8th World Forest Week will be held in conjunction with COFO26, running from 29 September to 7 October under the theme “Growing a better planet”. It will provide participants with a unique opportunity to exchange, connect and find responses for the forest sector to the issues discussed in COFO26.
All sessions of COFO26 and 8th World Forest Week will be webcast here<https://www.fao.org/webcast/home/en/>.
