UN report: The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets

FAO to launch the SOCO 2022 edition on 28 June at 13:00 CEST

The 2022 edition of The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO 2022) is a flagship report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It considers the ways in which trade policies based on both multilateral and regional efforts can address today’s challenges for sustainable development.

The increasing globalization of food and agricultural markets has raised concerns about the potential impacts of trade on the environment and on societies. Conflict in Ukraine, one of the world’s breadbaskets, threatens global food security in multiple ways, including through the disruption of global food and agricultural markets.

This report looks at different cooperation approaches in trade integration for sustainable growth by providing a systematic framework to assess the geography of food and agricultural trade.

Global cooperation in agricultural trade policies can address global challenges, such as economic crises, pandemics, conflicts and climate change, and it can contribute towards food security and healthy diets for all.

The launch of SOCO 2022 will include a statement by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu.

There will also be a technical presentation of the report. A policy panel comprising Edwini Kessie, Director, Agriculture and Commodities Division, World Trade Organization (WTO), Anders Aeroe, Director, Division of Enterprises and Institutions, International Trade Centre (ITC), and Stefano Schiavo, Director, School of International Studies, University of Trento will discuss the report. A Q&A session will also take place. FAO Chief Economist Máximo Torero will deliver closing remarks.

The launch can be followed by webcast at 13:00 (CEST) here<https://www.fao.org/webcast/home/en/item/5884/icode/> or by registering here<https://fao.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_EUiJU18sR-e2chlAg9AthQ>.
