World Bee Day 2022. Protecting and enhancing pollinators and their habitats for the good of all

FAO’s virtual event to celebrate the diversity of bees and beekeeping system

20 May 2022, 13:00-14:30 CEST

The theme for the World Bee Day 2022<https://www.fao.org/world-bee-day/en/>: "Bee Engaged: Celebrating the Diversity of Bees and Beekeeping Systems" draws attention to the crucial role played by bees - and pollinators in general - for a healthy planet.

These hard-working creatures help to promote sustainability and adaptation to climate change and play a major role in maintaining biodiversity, ensuring the survival and reproduction of many plants, supporting forest regeneration and improving the quantity and quality of agricultural production. Pollinators, such as bees, birds, and bats, in fact contribute to 35 percent of the world's crop production, pollinating 87 of the world's 115 major food crops, as well as to the production of many plant-based medicines.

Yet bees and many other types of pollinators are in decline. The expansion of agricultural fields, habitat reduction, climate change and increased use of agricultural chemicals are having a devastating impact on the survival of pollinators and their precious activity.

World Bee Day is an opportunity for all of us to promote actions that protect and enhance pollinators and their habitats, improve their abundance and diversity, and support the sustainable development of beekeeping.

In this context, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will celebrate World Bee Day 2022 with a virtual ceremony on 20 May 2022.

The virtual event will start at 13:00 CEST - to follow the event on Zoom please pre-register here<https://fao.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ylRxPoCoTZizcrbjC1KvXQ>, or watch the live webcast here<https://www.fao.org/webcast/home/en/item/5847/icode/>.

The event will feature bee and pollinator experts from around the world who will debate the importance of preserving bee varieties and supporting sustainable beekeeping systems, the threats, and challenges they face, and their contribution to livelihoods and food systems.

QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General, will open the event with a video message of welcome. This will be followed by remarks from David Cooper, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Jeff Pettis, President of the International Federation of Beekeepers' Associations (Apimondia).

The event will also feature a panel session on stories from the field with the participation of Zahira Nedjraoui, President of the Beekeepers Association of the United Arab Emirates, Leo Alexander Robert and Daniel Kobei, Indigenous Peoples Pollinators Network, Lucy King, Human-Elephant Co-Existence Program for Save the Elephants, Cristiano Menezes, Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa).

Maria Helena Semedo, FAO Deputy Director-General will deliver closing remarks while the entire event will be moderated by KimAnh Tempelman, FAO Programme Coordinator for Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture.

The event will be available in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian languages.
