Dear Mountain Friends,

Mountains have been neglected in the past and any further negligence
should be avoided. I expect from a group of mountain veteran activists
to work with all their might to take the most of every chance for the
benefit of mountains and sustainable development of these regions.
In the past 5 or 6 years, there has been a question flashing on and
off in my mind and that is: while we have a Convention on
Biodiversity, a Convention to Combat Desertification and other
International legal structures for Climate Change and…, why there
should not exist a world convention on mountains. Which of these
ecosystems and issues are more important in terms of resources (e.g.
fresh water), goods and services to mankind? If we admit that the
mountain regions of the world are more important than the other
ecosystems or at least at the same level of importance, then why they
are not taken so seriously.
Today, no one would doubt that we have to compensate the ignorance of
the past, but how and at what speed? This is where we should stop and
think; think of what we have done for the mountains in the past 20
years since Rio.
I believe we have to work harder and need cooperation and
participation, as the ignorance of the past can be compensated not
just by a single energy but by the synergy of all mountain lovers from
around the world to work jointly with a common cause, a cause for the
mountains.
I would like to express my thankfulness to Thomas and other friends at
the MP Secretariat for the well organizing of the Task Force Meeting
and also thank FAO, Italian Foreign Embassy and all the participants
who patiently helped materialize the meeting’s outcome to the last
minute.

Regards
Abdi (Abdollah)
