This year, March 22 marked the Swiss Ecological Deficit Day—the date the Swiss population used more natural resources and services than the country's ecosystems can regenerate within the full year.
"March 22 for Switzerland is perhaps more important than the 1st of August," the Swiss national day, our CEO, Mathis Wackernagel, wrote in an op-ed published by Neue Zürcher Zeitung<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=ab00cc433d&e=b3a96c8bdd>.
We designed the campaign with a view to raising public awareness ahead of several upcoming legislative initiatives that aim to address high resource consumption in Switzerland. Global Footprint Network is also organizing two separate workshops on energy<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=20550908d0&e=b3a96c8bdd> and food<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=39b5404fd7&e=b3a96c8bdd> in May to spark a dialogue on natural resources consumption, energy conservation and economic performance. Please contact Ingrid Heinrich at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> if you are interested in attending a workshop.

March has been an important month for us, with the release of the 2016 edition of the National Footprint Accounts, as announced here<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=b1f92259c4&e=b3a96c8bdd>. Canberra's residents live a high Ecological Footprint lifestyle, at 8.9 global hectares per person<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=9033e3c041&e=b3a96c8bdd>. That's according to the latest ACT State of the Environment Report, published last month. The Australian Capital Territory (ACT), or Canberra's district, is just 910 square miles and counts about 400,000 inhabitants. Remarkably, that small enclave has calculated its Ecological Footprint<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=703b8c759a&e=b3a96c8bdd> four times already over the last 16 years, with the help of the University of Sydney. "It's not about saying to people 'you can't live well'... the increasing trend globally is that we can maintain high living standards and strong economic growth without impacting the environment," Environment Minister Simon Corbell told The Canberra Times<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=fb3980ec14&e=b3a96c8bdd>. Mr. Corbell said the government would seek address the high Footprint with urban renewal policies including light rail and improvements in resource recovery, The Canberra Times reported.
Scotland is officially embarking on the path to reducing its Ecological Footprint<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=12862f32a0&e=b3a96c8bdd>, compliments of Terry A'Hearn, a member of Global Footprint Network's Advisory Council<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=20f6512283&e=b3a96c8bdd>. Terry is a long-time practitioner of the Ecological Footprint, first as the director of sustainable development at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Victoria, Australia, when Global Footprint Network calculated the state's Ecological Footprint for the first time, in 2005. Last year Terry became the CEO of the Scottish EPA. It didn't take him long to zero in on the Ecological Footprint as a major metric to assess unsustainability and to track progress going forward. We look forward to seeing how the efforts of Terry and his team unfold.
Honoring Sustainability Leader Sir Partha Dasgupta

Sir Partha Dasgupta, PhD, the Frank Ramsey Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Cambridge, helped shape the Sustainable Development Goals, and co-chaired the committee that advised Pope Francis on his encyclical on climate change and the environment—among other achievements. He will be honored next month as the 2016 Tyler Prize Laureate<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=8a5435999a&e=b3a96c8bdd>. We couldn't be more pleased with the jury's decision.
Dasgupta challenges the conventional thinking on how countries measure their well-being and places an emphasis on population and environmental sustainability. Perhaps most fundamentally, he points out that rather than focusing on income, we need to track wealth. "We have long measured the progress of nations in terms of what they produce and consume as expressed in the gross domestic product (GDP)," Dasgupta says. "We need to be working with an entirely different measure. GDP doesn't tell us if we are growing in a way that benefits all in society, including future people; it ignores factors like inequity and whether we are using our natural resources in a way that can also benefit future generations."
Congratulations, Sir Partha, and keep up this critical work!

When I was growing up in Shenzhen, China, one of the must-join activities in my high school was the "Earth Hour" performance. On the last Saturday in March, environmental organizations run by high school students, government, and companies organized performances and games using only small lights (rather than bright stage lighting) in large communities to encourage residents to join outdoor activities while turning off their lights at home. Read more about Global Footprint Network research assistant Krina Huang's evolving view of Earth Hour here<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=4518f17c9b&e=b3a96c8bdd> (English) or on our China website here<http://footprintnetwork.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=6b189d93d725df997bc7ec31d&id=0843c4edad&e=b3a96c8bdd> (Chinese).

Can You Guess This Country?
On 25 March, this country will bust its annual ecological budget—its citizens' demand for food, wood and carbon dioxide absorption will begin to exceed what the country's ecosystems can renew over the full year. Trade is a fact of life in our globalized economy, but just as a trade deficit can be a risk, so can an ecological deficit.
This country shares the majority of its border with the sea and the country's outline creates a memorable, unique shape. Art and architecture from here have had an influence around the world. The Alps is just one mountain range that extends through here.
Now, can you identify this nation?
