The Plant Production and Protection Division (AGP) is pleased to announce the Seminar:

"The Myths of Safe Pesticides"
by
André Leu, IFOAM President

Tuesday, 17 February 2015
10.00-12.00
German Room (C269)

André Leu is the President of the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM), the world umbrella body for the organic sector, and the author of the recently published book entitled "The Myths of Safe Pesticides". The book outlines the many serious deficiencies in the regulation of pesticides used in our food supply and proposes that much of the criteria used to underpin the current use patterns are based on out of date assumptions rather than on the latest published science.

At the seminar, the author will present an overview of the main findings of his book and alternative practices to reduce pesticides while achieving high yields. It will look at IPM strategies that can replace synthetic pesticides with non-toxic or rapidly biodegradable natural compounds. It will also present examples of eco functional intensification, where the science of applied agroecology can be used to replace pesticides by integrating functional biodiversity into farming systems.

All staff are welcome to attend
