Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update:
Brief commentary:
ˇ FAO has revised the price series corresponding to Pakistan ordinary basmati prices since June 2011, which results in slight changes in the values of the FAO ALL Rice Price index in the successive months.
ˇ In April 2013, the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) averaged 240 points, 2 points less than in March. Quotations of the higher and lower quality Indica relinquished a few points, while aromatic and Japonica rice prices gained 1 point each. Aromatic rice quotations have been on a upward drive since November last year.
ˇ Export prices in Thailand retreated for the second consecutive month, notwithstanding the appreciation of the Baht, as the arrival of new supplies from the secondary rice crops coincided with a slow pace of new sales. Prices also tended to slide in Viet Nam and Pakistan, while they moved up in the United States and in South America, amid a thinning of supplies, and in India, because of delays in the harvest of the rabi crop.
ˇ According to the index, rice international prices in the first four months of the year have been 3 percent above their 2012 corresponding level. Particularly outstanding has been the surge in aromatic prices, which stood 24 percent higher.
