Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update:
Brief commentary:

ˇ Confirming the tendency observed in August the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-04=100) fell in September by 14 points, or 6 percent, to 224. All the various types of rice were affected, but the drop was most pronounced for the lower quality Indica. Prices of Japonica rice, which had been extremely firm until August, also recorded a sharp 6 percent slide in September.

ˇ Prices dropped in the major origins, especially in Thailand, where the benchmark Thai white rice 100%B, which had already fell by 7 percent in August, retreated by a further 9 percent in September. The fall was even sharper for the Thai A1 super fully broken rice, which fell by 14 percent to its lowest level since August 2010. Prices in India, Viet Nam and Pakistan were also generally down, while they showed greater resilience in the United States and South America.

ˇ Based on the FAO Index, export prices over January-September averaged the same value in 2013 as in 2012, with quotations down for Indica and Japonica, while fragrant rice quotations were still 22 percent higher.
For more information on prices, you may wish to consult the International Commodity Price Database http://www.fao.org/economic/est/statistical-data/est-cpd/en/, which gives access to weekly prices of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100 % broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 1989 onwards. Monthly international and domestic prices for rice and other selected commodities in 83 countries are available through the Food Price Data and Analysis Tool (http://www.fao.org/giews/pricetool/).
