Dear Subscriber,

We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update.
____________________________________________________________________
Brief commentary of the month:

* The FAO All Rice Price index (2002-04=100) averaged 196 points in November 2015, the lowest level since January 2008 and 3 points, or 1.4 percent less than in the previous month. The index dipped because of a 2.5 percent and 5.1 percent retreat in the Japonica and Aromatic rice quotations respectively, which more than outweighed an increase of around 1 percent in Indica prices, both for the higher and lower qualities.

* Export prices were stable to slightly higher in Thailand, with the benchmark Thai 100%B white rice up by 0.8 percent from October. However, the arrival of newly harvested supplies weighed negatively on Thai Hom Mali rice quotations, which dipped by 10 percent over the month. Prices were relatively unchanged in India, with the exception of Basmati which recovered slightly on expectation of new sales to the Islamic Republic of Iran. By contrast, prices firmed in Viet Nam, as traders continued to secure local supplies for delivery to the Philippines and Indonesia, and in Pakistan, on steady shipments to Eastern Africa. Prices in the Americas were stable to lower in the United States, where Japonica rice was under particular downward pressure. They also tended to fall in Argentina and Uruguay, while they rose in Brazil, partly reflecting a strengthening of the Real against the US dollar.

* According to the FAO All Rice Price Index, international rice prices in November 2015 were 16 percent lower than in November 2014. According to the various indices, international rice prices have averaged 10.3 percent lower since January, with the decline reaching as much as 32 percent in the case of aromatic rice.
