Brief commentary of the month:
ˇ There seems to be no end to the slide of international rice prices that started in September 2014. The July 2015 decrease was small, though, since, at 211 points the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-04=100) was only 2 points down, or 1.0 percent. The price weakness dominated the principal market segments, with the Higher and Lower Quality Indica sub-indices receding by 1.3 percent and 1.7 percent respectively, with a sharper 2.7 percent dip witnessed in the Aromatic rice market. International Japonica rice prices were unchanged.
ˇ Against the general tendency, the benchmark Thai 100%B white rice was up by 4 percent in July, at USD 401 per tonne, as concern over the drought and delays in plantings sustained quotations in the first three weeks of the month, before abundant rains turned the direction of prices negative again. Among other exporters, the arrival of new crop supplies on the market pushed prices down in Viet Nam. They also fell in Pakistan, Brazil, Uruguay and the United States, but moved up in India in reaction to a revival of sales to Africa.
ˇ According to the FAO All Rice Price Index, international rice prices over January-July 2015 averaged 8.0 percent less than in the corresponding period in 2014. At 211 points, the July value of the index is the lowest since June 2010.
