Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update:
Brief commentary:

ˇ In June 2014, the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) averaged 236 points, merely one point above May, supported by small increases in the value of the four price sub-indices (Indica - higher quality; Indica - lower quality; Japonica; and Aromatic).

ˇ Actual export quotations were fairly stable in all the major export sources. Only in Thailand was there some evidence of price momentum, reflecting the temporary suspension of rice sales from government stocks and a brisk pace of sales. The strengthening of Thai prices mainly concerned ordinary rice, as the fragrant rice was little changed. Prices were also up in Uruguay, but were generally stable in the other supplying countries.

ˇ In January-June 2014, the FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 235 points, only two points less than in the same period last year. Indeed, a 14 percent gain in the Japonica index so far this year tended neutralized the marked declines seen for Indica rice (down 8 percent for the higher quality; down 16 percent for the lower quality), and the more moderate 2 percent dip of aromatic rice prices.
For more information on prices, you may wish to consult the International Commodity Price Database http://www.fao.org/economic/est/statistical-data/est-cpd/en/, which gives access to weekly prices of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100 % broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 1989 onwards. Monthly international and domestic prices for rice and other selected commodities in 83 countries are available through the Food Price Data and Analysis Tool (http://www.fao.org/giews/pricetool/).
You might also be interested to visit the FAO World Food Situation portal, which provides monthly updates on the World Cereal Supply and Demand Situation and Outlook (http://www.fao.org/worldfoodsituation/en/).
