Brief commentary:

ˇ In January 2014, the FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) averaged 223 points, 4 points, or 1.6 percent, less than in December. The weakness concerned all the rice categories, except round grain Japonica, the price of which remained stable. Prices subsided in the three other market segments, especially the lower quality Indica and the aromatic rice, which retreated by 3.9 percent and 2.7 percent respectively. Prices of the higher quality Indica held steadier.

ˇ Quotations in Thailand registered strong declines in January, confirming a tendency that has prevailed for most of 2013. The fully broken Thai A1 super, in particular, gave in almost 11 percent compared to December 2013, falling to its lowest level since October 2009. Prices were also under pressure in the other Asian origins, while they stood firm in the Americas

ˇ The year opened with quotations that were significantly weaker than one year ago, especially for Thai rice. According to the index, the price differential was largest for the lower quality Indica, which in January 2014 was quoted 16.5 percent lower than in January 2013.

For more information on prices, you may wish to consult the International Commodity Price Database http://www.fao.org/economic/est/statistical-data/est-cpd/en/, which gives access to weekly prices of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100 % broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 1989 onwards.
Monthly international and domestic prices for rice and other selected commodities in 83 countries are available through the Food Price Data and Analysis Tool (http://www.fao.org/giews/pricetool/).
