Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update.
____________________________________________________________________
Brief commentary of the month:
* The FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-04=100) averaged 200 points in July, up 1.9 points (0.9 percent) from its June value. Last month's slight advance was the result of firming fragrant and higher quality Indica quotations. Stronger basmati prices resulted in the Aromatica Index rising 7 points (4.2 percent), whereas the strengthening was in the order of 3 points (1.4 percent) in the case of Higher Quality Indica Index. Prices held steadier in the other rice market segments, with both lower quality Indica and Japonica prices little varied relative to June levels.
* Although exportable availabilities remained limited, sluggish demand kept white rice quotations close to June levels in India, with benchmark Thai 100% B white rice also holding steady ahead of a large public stock auction on the 25th of July. Movements were more pronounced in the parboiled segments of India and Thailand, with price gains in both countries supported by dwindling paddy availabilities and, in the case of India, sales to Iraq. Supply tightness lent support to prices in Pakistan, especially of Basmati rice, whereas currency movements added to the firm undertone in Brazil. An upbeat pace of sales similarly led to firming quotations in Argentina and Uruguay, while efforts to attract buyers extended declines in quotations in Viet Nam and of medium-grain rice in the United States.
* According to the FAO All Rice Price Index, international rice prices in the first seven months of 2016 were 9 percent below their corresponding level of 2015, mirroring weak Japonica and Aromatica quotations. Meanwhile, the strengthening of long-grain prices registered since the early part of the year brought January-July Indica values closer to year-earlier averages.
