Food Price Forum is moderated by the FAO Sub-regional Office for the Pacific Islands, in collaboration with the Policy Assistance Support Service
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to attach the latest AP Weekly Price Monitor (28 September).
Over the past week, staple food commodity prices remained relatively stable in most countries except for the following:
- In Myanmar groundnut oil prices increased by 5 percent and were 46 percent above those observed a year earlier.
Under national policy highlights, China plans to spend CYN 72.02 billion (USD 11.35 billion) during the 2011-2015 period on improving a quality inspection system for farm production. Some of the measures will focus on in the quality of farm produce, expansion of local-level centres and improvement of risk-monitoring information platforms.
In the weather aspect, heavy rains in India during August and early September are making up for the shortfall in the early part of India's monsoon season. Rain-fed crops such as rice, sugar cane and cotton are expected not to suffer as much as originally feared. However, the damage as of 25 September accounts for 25,000 crop hectares and 11,000 heads of livestock lost. In Pakistan, recent floods washed away 307,000 hectares of cropland and over 7,000 heads of livestock. In Viet Nam, the Steering Committee for Urban Flood Control Prevention has successfully implemented a number of measures (clearing the sewer route, dredging the sewer pipeline, etc.) to curb flooding along several streets that previously were inundated after almost every rainfall.
With best regards,
AP Weekly Price Monitor
