Dairy Outlook is a service of FAO's Trade and Markets Division<http://www.fao.org/economic/est/est-commodities/dairy/en/>
Hi Micheal,
FYI
Ciao
Piet
Thanks to Piet for sending in this report. Perhaps other list members would like to send in reports, if they live in a country, such as Zambia, where information on milk and dairy production is not often widely circulated?
Some interesting features of this article are (based on the article and a visit I made to Zambia last year):
* Per capita consumption milk and dairy products is low: 19 litres/yr
* Growth in the dairy industry is being underpinned by a government school milk programme
* Small-scale farmers (some producing less that 10 litres/day/farm - often milking beef cattle) are supplying the formal sector in ever-greater numbers
* The dairy companies, such as Palmalat, are paying an attractive price for milk collected from cooperative milk collection centres and are working in close collaboration to increase the volume and quality
* Through supplying milk, apart from a regular income, many poor people are receiving additional benefits, including: assistance in setting up bank accounts (which the vast majority farmers do not have); access to veterinary services; supplies of medicines and other inputs
* As the milk is closely monitored at the collection centre (and by the dairy companies), this has resulted in a substantial increase in quality (lower bacteria counts and fewer instances of antibiotics) and reduced adulteration (with water)
Seeing one of these centres operating, first-hand, really brings home the benefits for the whole community that dairy production can bring: an enlightening and inspiring experience.
Once again, I would encourage other members to send in reports and comments on dairying in some of the less well-know countries.
All the best,
Michael
