Dear all,
Although I am not co-moderating the list anymore, I am still subscribed as a list member (my heart is still with dairy!). It is true, I didn’t want to make any fuss about my leaving the division… in the end the important thing is that the list goes on .. and fortunately Michael came back to the dairy work just in time to take over again! Nevertheless, I was very pleased to realize someone is asking for me and to read this very nice message Mike wrote.
Well, so I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and contribution over the years… let’s keep in touch through the list!
All the best,
Barbara

Subject: Barbara?
Dear Michael and DOL,
DOL has been very useful to me since 1998, when P.R. Gupta, the late publisher of Dairy India Yearbook, suggested I join. The email format works best for filing and retrieving information. Many thanks to Michael and Barbara Senfter for moderating DOL. Will Barbara return after her summer holiday?
Best wishes,
Bruce
Reply:
Thank you to Bruce for this message and also for his early query about where Barbara is.
Yes, it’s true, as Bruce appears to have divined, Barbara is no longer working on the List. Early this year, she received a well-deserved promotion and has moved to FAO’s Fisheries division to supervise statistics there. Before she moved, we discussed whether Barbara should send out an announcement to the List informing everyone of her move, which I encouraged her to do; however, in the end, she decided that she didn’t wish to go with any fuss, so decided not to send a message.
Therefore, I’m very happy that Bruce has asked where Barbara is, as this provides me with the opportunity to express my sincere appreciation for the hard work and dedication she has put into moderating the List – and others areas of our work at FAO – over the past 14 years.
Barbara came to work with us when the List had been running for about 3 years and a first provided mainly a supporting role, which then developed into running the List when I was away from the office for extended periods – although her involvement was still not very visible. In 2004, I moved to another job in FAO and from that point Barbara took over full responsibility for moderating the List – in other words, for a period of nine years. Without her input the List would not be here today – of that I am certain. As members know, apart from keeping the List running, Barbara was very active in promoting World Milk Day and World School Milk Day every year.
Shortly after I came back to the dairy work, Barbara received her promotion, so I have now replaced her as the moderator – we made the change over in June.
Barbara: Thank you for everything you have contributed over the many years we have worked together – it’s really been a pleasure, and I still miss you a lot.
Michael

Dear Michael,
Sounds …. small-family-scale development.
By the way, where is Barbara, who's been running DOL for years? We love you both!
Ciao! Bruce

Dear Michael, Andrew, all,
A move to e.g. LinkedIn would be fine with me, as long as the discussion would remain moderated. Several LinkedIn groups were corrupted by spam quite soon after their establishment, and moderation is essential to avoid this.
I would not favour a move to Facebook, though.

Michael and All,
I have been doing extension education and industry relations work relative to dairy markets and policy for 35 years and I think that those of us who are on the supply side have to admit to ourselves that there are a lot of passive consumers of our work who, for various reasons, are not interactive. This may be simply because they are interested in the subject but don't have a lot to contribute. Some may be daunted by the size and global dimension of this group and wonder if their view is sufficiently interesting or important. People from dairy sectors at different stages of development or people occupying different strata along the supply chain may wonder if their special interest is of sufficient general interest to this diverse group. For some on this list, the ability to write confidently in English may be inhibiting. I would not get too disheartened. The lack of interaction is not a measure of interest in what you are doing.
I also can't help but wonder if this group would be interested in a different platform than an email listserve. Email is still a great technology for bilateral communication, and I think it is convenient for broadcast announcements. I'm less convinced that it is the best medium for interaction. I suspect many of us have identities on LinkedIn for example. Facebook is another possibility but I for one prefer to push business and professional interactions towards LinkedIn. Either one provides a structure that may be more amenable to group exchanges. For myself, I like that email is a Push technology. I am more likely to see something if it is pushed to my email than if I have to go look for it. Others are more accustomed to routinely looking for what's new on LinkedIn. Facebook will push alerts for cohorts of individuals and groups identified as "close friends".
Have you considered setting up a LinkedIn group or a Facebook group (which you can make Private to restrict access if that makes sense)? I think this might be more conducive to getting offerings from other people. It might also facilitate postings from and links to other dairy outlook information, such as USDA's World Ag Outlook Board monthly report, USDA's Economic Research Service outlook and other reports, University of Wisconsin's Dr Mark Stephenson's monthly outlook podcasts and other information, the French CNIEL monthly global outlook summary, the host of information accessible on the Italian consultancy CLAL website, the IDF annual report, etc
I don't know to what extent the ability to simply connect to these websites is difficult for some individuals. Perhaps this is a constraint. LinkedIn and Facebook do have smartphone apps, for individuals who can only access cellular data. (Of course, a smartphone can connect via a browser but the apps often format better.)

Dear Michael,
I am very new to this list, and therefore this is the first communication I received from you.
I haven’t had yet the time to read the report on Milk and Dairy Products in Human Nutrition, but the table of contents is already very interesting to me.
My current job is about looking at my company’s dairy business from an operations point of view and to help shaping our strategies for the mid and long term. One of our fundamental purposes is to help the world “go well” by providing adequate food (“Nutrition, Health and Wellness”). For that, reports like this are very important, since they enable me (and everybody else) to see a world’s view of the issues, challenges, advances, etc., that determine our industry and its sustainability.
Therefore, thank you very much for having made this report and for doing the work you do. FAO, through people like you, are providing an invaluable service to the world’s community.

Thanks to all those who provided comments (listed below), including Bruce’s suggestion that I needed a cappuccino on FAO’s famous roof terrace.
Well, having just come back from having the same, I must admit I feel a bit more sanguine ….. however, being by nature the sort of person who doesn’t see why he should be pushing if no-one else is, I fear that my feeling of well-being will only be short lived – unless we have regular participation by members as an accompaniment to my coffees.
Other the life of the list – about 16 years – we have faced this problem a number of times in the past. When we started in 1997, e-mail was new and getting/sending one as a novel experience: not anymore. Still, this List is a system for exchanging information, not simply supplying information. Therefore, every member has something to add … and we want to hear from you. Gabriele and Miguel,it’s nice to know that members read the messages, but we also want to receive comments and information from members; only in this way will we continue to be a dynamic and varied discussion list.
Michael

Dear Michael,
I appreciate this report very much since I am often involved in discussions about the role of the dairy industry in feeding the world. This report offers a lot of information for improving discussions about this topic.
And it is important that it is made under responsibility of FAO. I am sure I will use it for on-going discussions. Very valuable overview of contemporary facts.

Dear Michael,
Sounds like you need one of your famed cappuccinos, on the balcony of the FAO building with a biscotti or some sugary confection. Many thanks for the news that Chapter 8 (Dairy-industry development programmes: Their role in food and nutrition security and poverty reduction by Dugdill, Bennett, Phelan & Scholten) is published. Milk is again showing how important it is in nutrition and small-family-scale development.
By the way, where is Barbara, who's been running DOL for years? We love you both!

Dear All,
The FAO report on Milk and Dairy Products in Human Nutrition is available at: http://www.fao.org/docrep/018/i3396e/i3396e.pdf
I know that perhaps members need cranking up after the break; however, I have to say that simply sending out messages and not receiving comments or contributions in reply is rather a thankless task … hardly makes me feel like opening the mailbox each morning, when all I see are bulk mailings and circulation reports. After all, this is not meant to be a one-man-show.
Therefore, I would like to ask everyone to take a few minutes out, stretch your fingers and let’s have some discussion … or a least some sign of life.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Michael
