Input received on question “1.3 Are there any forms of collaboration between small farms that work particularly well? Why? How does the size of the farm affect cooperation?"

From: Ghulam Qadir Arbab <[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>>

Small farms cooperatives, each on volunteering basis, (work on a basis of an) expectation of same services in return. As such these have little impact on their income because whatever services they get free – they also work in return free for them.

The most important problems faced by small farms is lack of funds to invest in their farm. Pesticides consume a big amount among other items of cost of production. Due to lack of funds small farms are forced to buy pesticides on credit.

Unfortunately, the pesticide vendor gives bad quality ('fake companies’) pesticides on comparatively higher prices than internationally registered products.

The small farms suffer two ways: losses by negative impact on farm production on the one hand and heavy credit that consume the most important part of profit from farm. Moreover, these small farmers are also forced to sell their produce to same vendor on whatever price vendor offer them.

Input from the moderator: That leaves us with the question if cooperatives (formal or informal) of small farmers to buy the high priced inputs such as pesticides, could help individual small farmers? Any examples, anyone?
