FAO Statistics at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26)
31 October - 12 November 2021
The UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26)<http://newsletters.fao.org/c/1kVrNa5iscHcxMPKhK7vHd>, hosted by the United Kingdom in partnership with Italy takes place from 31 October to 12 November 2021 in Glasgow. The aim of this year’s edition is to finalize remaining decisions to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
FAO is present to reinforce its commitment to supporting countries in the climate negotiations, and will continue to advocate for and promote sustainable, efficient and resilient agri-food systems as part of the solution to the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation.
On the occasion of COP26 and to contribute to the discussion on how data and statistics can support climate objectives, we present a selection of initiatives and resources produced by FAO related to addressing climate change and its impacts on agri-food systems, as well as environmental objectives more broadly.

Did you know FAO has a new database on Emissions Shares?
FAO unveiled a new database on Emissions Shares<http://newsletters.fao.org/c/1kVrNg8oNOoOtykR7Oveyx> at COP26. The new database hosted in FAOSTAT will track carbon emissions from agri-food systems around the world. It covers, in addition to emissions on agricultural land, pre- and post-production processes in agri-food systems, such as those linked to the production of inputs; energy generation and consumption in food supply chains; and waste disposal. This new tool is instrumental for the discussions countries are having at the summit.

New findings of FAO's FRA 2020 Remote Sensing Survey now available
According to the first findings of FAO's new Global Remote Sensing Survey<http://newsletters.fao.org/c/1kVrNpd3kdXencAwnV4OQw>, agricultural expansion drives almost 90 percent of global deforestation – an impact much greater than previously thought. The FAO-led study was conducted using satellite data and tools developed in partnership with NASA and Google, and in close collaboration with more than 800 national experts from almost 130 countries.

Pre- and post-production processes along supply chains increasingly dominate GHG emissions from agri-food systems globally and in most countries
In a new open access paper published in the Earth System Science Data (ESSD) Journal, the authors present results from the new FAOSTAT database on food systems emissions, covering all countries over ten time series 1990–2019.

The share of agri-food systems in total greenhouse gas emissions. Global, regional and country trends 1990–2019
This analytical brief presents results of the first database on agri-food systems beyond the farm gate developed by FAO. Statistics on absolute emissions and their shares are disseminated at the country, regional and global level, over the period 1990–2019, in the FAOSTAT Emissions shares domain.

Methods for estimating greenhouse gas emissions from food systems Series
[http://newsletters.fao.org/i/amf_fao/project_401/pART_3.png?size=170x0&w=BPPh8ABexMUhiiYeODtZdf5VKwpw]
Part I: domestic food transport
This paper is the first in a series of ongoing and planned efforts to build on current knowledge and develop methodologies for estimating new components of food systems emissions, with a view to disseminate the information in FAOSTAT. It provides a methodology for estimating the GHG emissions associated with historic and current domestic food transport, in an effort to inform countries of the environmental impact of their food distribution systems.

Part II: waste disposal
The second volume of the series detailing novel methodologies for estimating key components of food systems emissions provides a methodology for estimating the GHG emissions associated with emissions from waste in the food system (e.g., food-related processes in landfills, incineration, wastewater management processes). It will inform countries of the environmental impacts and possible options to reduce them.

Part III: energy use in fertilizer manufacturing, food processing, packaging, retail and household consumption
The third volume of the series describes methods for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuel-based energy use in agri-food systems processes outside agricultural land, i.e. those associated with pre- and post-production activities. It will inform countries of the environmental impacts of agri-food systems and the possible options to reduce them.
