Save the dates!
We are pleased to announce that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) is holding the FAO Regional Food Safety Conference for Asia and the Pacific 2020, from 10-12 June, 2020 in Bangkok, Thailand. This is to provide early information. A webpage will be up soon and you will be informed of the registration details in due course.

We will send you another email with the concept note and informing more about the Conference in early next year so stay tuned!

Background: Across Asia and the Pacific, news on food safety issues frequently hits the headlines. Reports of food contamination and foodborne diseases regularly cause alarm among the public and impact local businesses. This has wider negative economic consequences as trade and tourism are adversely affected. It is now well-recognized that food security, food safety and nutrition go hand-in-hand and achieving Zero Hunger or Sustainable Development Goals 2 (SDG2) is not only about providing adequate quantity of food for everyone but is also about ensuring safe and nutritious diets for all. As a concrete follow-up to two high-level global food safety conferences held in 2019 in Addis Ababa<http://www.fao.org/about/meetings/future-food-safety/> and Geneva<https://www.wto.org/english/tratop_e/sps_e/faowhowtoapril19_e.htm>, the region aims to pave a pathway to integrate food safety in the SDG2 agenda and to tailor approaches to fit unique regional contexts.

Objectives: The FAO Regional Food Safety Conference aims to hold in-depth discussions on food control systems in the region, on existing and emerging food safety issues, analyze the impact of drivers of change such as technology and climate, to explore mechanisms for all sectors in food and agriculture to collaborate, to evaluate further the importance of the subject in the context of SDG2, and to promote creation of a Food Safety Culture with a slogan "Regulate. Delegate. Participate".

Dates: 10-12 June 2020

Place: Bangkok, Thailand (venue to be announced later)

Highlights

*         A high-level session

* Technical plenary and concurrent sessions on key food safety issues in the region

* A student session for next generation food safety practitioners

* Networking opportunities with policymakers, regulators, scientists, consumer associations, technical organizations, NGOs, food industry associations, media professionals, academia and students

Sincerely,

Sridhar Dharmapuri
Senior Food Safety and Nutrition Officer

Masami Takeuchi
