Subject: FAO VPH-Updates 20 May 2014
Dear subscribers,
This week the Animal Health Service at FAO is organizing a two-day Technical Consultation Meeting on MERS-CoV and Animals hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Sultanate of Oman. The meeting will discuss the global and regional situation, latest developments and research needs regarding the role of animals in the origin/transmission of the virus. We look forward in sharing the outcome of the consultation shortly
Best regards on behalf of the FAO VPH team

BULLETIN NUMBER: No. 7
Veterinary Public Health (VPH) is defined as “The contributions to the physical, mental and social well-being of humans through an understanding and application of veterinary science” [WHO/FAO/OIE definition 1999]. Human health, animal husbandry and animal health are closely connected and VPH is a fundamental part of public health whereby human health and well-being are the main objectives. VPH is multidisciplinary and contributes to many areas of public health that are not always related to animals. In order to integrate veterinary public health into the goals of public health, it is essential to improve collaboration between human and veterinary medical science, environmental science and other related fields - in accordance with ‘one health’ principles.

EMPRES-i compiles animal disease events, outbreak and surveillance data (including zoonoses) from numerous sources (e.g. FAO representations, FAO reports, Technical projects, OIE reports, official governments, Regional Organizations, FAO Reference Centres and laboratories) for supporting analytic and risk assessments on threats of animal origin including emergent zoonoses.
FAO also verifies disease events from additional sources including country or regional project reports, technical reports, scientific articles, partner Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), cooperating institutions, public domain sites, media search engines and web-based animal and human health surveillance systems (e.g. GPHIN, PROMED, Health Map)”.
