The importance of educating people about the environment has been central to UN policy since the 1970s. Raising awareness and knowledge remains an essential element of any environmental education programme, however, there must also be a shift to increase the capacities, action skills and problem solving abilities of young people. Incorporating behavioural science (BeSci) into education programmes can increase the chances of behavioural change in the future.

FAO, YUNGA and UNITAR are aiming to provide teachers, educators and youth leaders, across the world, with the resources and know how to implement behaviour change into their programmes and initiatives. In order to do this a Behavioural Science Guidance Document for educators is being developed.
