Contact: (+39) 06 570 53625 On 6 July, panel discussion on food price volatility and the role of speculation, with the President of Dominican RepublicA panel discussion will be held at FAO headquarters on Food Price Volatility and the Role of Speculation with the participation of President Leonel Fernández of the Dominican Republic and FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva. Through the initiative of President Fernández, a UN resolution was adopted last year on “Addressing excessive volatility in food and related financial and commodity markets.” On Friday, he will give the keynote address at the panel discussion. Graziano da Silva will open and close the event. Food prices have eased in recent months, but prices are likely to remain high compared to previous decades, and high price volatility is expected to continue. High levels of food price volatility can transform vulnerable people into hungry people. For farmers, volatility increases uncertainty and discourages investments. Some argue that speculation has no or only minimal effects on prices. Others believe that there are people gambling with food commodities in international markets. The meeting will discuss the latest developments in food price volatility and its drivers. Journalists are invited to attend the panel discussion, which starts at 09:30, and a press conference at 12:30 with President Fernández and Director-General Graziano da Silva. Both events will also be webcast at http://www.fao.org/webcast/
Accreditation: Accreditation will take place at the main entrance to FAO the morning of the event. A valid press card or letter of assignment on company letterhead, plus picture ID, are required. | |
