Grantley Prescod Primary
celebrates World School Milk Day
9/27/2012
THE
importance of drinking milk was highlighted yesterday, as students
of the Grantley Prescod Primary School located in the Pine, St.
Michael, celebrated World School Milk Day with the help of
representatives of Pine Hill Dairy.
World School Milk Day is
organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United
Nations and is celebrated in over 30 countries around the world,
including Barbados, on an annual basis. Launched in 2000, the day,
which is celebrated on the last Wednesday in September, is used to
promote the importance of drinking milk at school to children in a
fun and educational way. Indeed, the students seemed eager to see
Pine Hill Dairy’s “Milky, the Mascot”, after he arrived on the
compound to interact and engage them and they also received a few
give-away milk products, while sampling Pine Hill Dairy’s milk
products.
Carlton Reid, Acting Principal of Grantley Prescod
Memorial, stressed the importance of the day to staff and
students.
“Today at Grantley Prescod Memorial, we are
celebrating World School Milk Day. This has become an annual event
to the school. It took place last year and this morning we have
Milky the Mascot from Pine Hill as well as some members from Pine
Hill and they are serving the children some milk products,” Reid
indicated to the Barbados Advocate.
“I am very happy that
they have come this morning, because it will sensitise the children
to the use of milk, the various vitamins contained in milk and the
properties in milk. It will also give them an alternative beverage
to use at break time, rather than using some of the beverages that
are very high in sugar content,” he said.
Acknowledging that
there have been concerns about school children in general consuming
unhealthy snacks and beverages, given the rise in chronic
non-communicable diseases, Reid also stated that the school has
taken the initiative to break this trend by introducing a day where
healthier foods can be enjoyed.
“Every Thursday we have
healthy fruit snacks, where we serve local fruit and then local
beverages like lemonade. Once apples are in season, we also serve
golden apple drink and things like that. We have started again this
term and this Thursday, we are going to have some healthy fruit
snacks available to the children,” he said.
Meanwhile,
Commercial Manager with Pine Hill, Sandra Ramoutar, indicated that
the company is happy to be part of such an initiative, which has
become an annual event and one which has the interest of children at
heart. (RSM)
