Marking the 12th World School Milk Day

This year, the 12th World School Milk day was marked with the aim to draw the public attention to the importance of consuming milk in everyday nutrition, especially for school children. On Wednesday, 28 September 2011, students from over 80 countries all over the world celebrated the World School Milk Day enjoying the consumption of that perfect food stuff, not only because milk tastes great, but also because it is really beneficial for them. Let us remind ourselves that the First World School Milk Day was marked in September 2000 and since then it has become an annual event celebrated in many countries of the world.

That day gives the international community the chance to focus on the importance of consuming milk in school and on the health benefits it has on child development.

This day is organized every year in Zagreb, as well, and that by courtesy of the Croatian Dairy Association, the City Office for Education, Culture and Sports, and the City Office for Agriculture and Forestry of the City of Zagreb.

Within the framework of this event, each year, on the central Zagreb square, the Ban Jelačić Square, children of Zagreb schools and kindergartens perform plays with the theme of milk within which they present their thoughts on that important food stuff. Their thoughts on milk are also presented in their art works. All the kids also take part in quiz games in which the winners win valuable dairy packages. Šara the Cow has been traditionally enhancing the manifestation, and during those days, the children can learn everything about making cottage cheese and cream from Barica, the lady farmer who has been selling her products at the Dolac City Market for 30 years.

Actually, according to the data of the Croatian Dairy Association, milk consumption in Croatia is still at a low level compared to the developed countries of Europe and the world. Because of that, four years ago, the Office for Education started a programme which ensures every elementary school one glass of milk a day.

Key messages occasioned by the World School Milk Day:

·         Many children are either overfed or underfed – let us focus on their nutrition –that is more important now than ever!! It’s tasty, it’s nutritive and it’s celebrated all over the world... it’s milk!!!
