Dear readers,

The November 2012 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU) reports that China imported a record volume of wheat during the first nine months of the year. Ukraine is mulling a possible ban on wheat exports because of drought, which has wheat exporters in India hoping to benefit. The United States is reportedly preparing to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization over Thailand’s rice-support programme.

Global Food Prices fell by a modest 1 percent, although average prices were still 12 percent higher than at the same time last year. Domestic prices around the region were mostly stable. FAO is forecasting that world cereal production will drop 2.7 percent to 2.28 billion tonnes in 2012/13, although rice production should increase.
