Food Price Forum is moderated by the FAO Sub-regional Office for the Pacific Islands, in collaboration with the Markets and Trade Service
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to attach the latest AP Weekly Price Monitor (9 November).
You can find this and previous issues in http://www.fao.org/asiapacific/rap/home/asia-pacific-food-situation/asia-pacific-food-situation-weekly-update/en/
Over the past week, staple food commodity prices remained relatively stable in most countries except for the following:
- During the last week of October, in Lao PDR, prices for glutinous rice, beef and pork increased by 35, 14 and 8 percent, respectively. Prices for ordinary rice and chicken fell by 7 and 9 percent, correspondingly.
- From September to October, in Samoa, taro palagi prices increased by 10 percent and coconut prices dropped by 10 percent during the same period of time.
Under national policy highlights, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in India, approved the Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for the Rabi (winter) crops for 2012-13 to be marketed in 2013-14 as recommended by the Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), freezing MSP for barley and increasing MSP for oilseeds and pulses. In the case of wheat, further consultations will be needed.
The 9th Asia- Europe meeting (ASEM) held in Vientiane on 5-6 November 2012 highlighted the need for Asia and Europe to enhance development and stability in the two regions. The issues discussed include food and energy security, sustainable development, climate change and natural disaster response, among others (ASEM Info Board, 03 November 2012).
Sri Lanka's drought is affecting an estimated 1.8 million people. Since December 2011, for the second consecutive season, rainfall has been scanty. Many of the water reservoirs as a result have dried up and people living in the worst hit remote rural areas do not have access to safe drinking water. The Ministry of Disaster Management of Sri Lanka has appealed to international and local organizations and agencies to contribute to the Government of Sri Lanka’s efforts to assist the drought affected people (International Federation of Red Cross, 2 November 2012).
With best regards,
