Dear readers,

The December 2012 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU) reports that Typhoon Bopha has inflicted serious damage to the banana crop in The Philippines, a major fruit export for that country. Sanctions are forcing Iran to pay higher prices for commodity imports, wheat flour prices are rising in Afghanistan because of limited milling capacity, and scientists have decoded important sections of the wheat genome.

Global food prices fell 1.5 percent in November, and were 3 percent lower than in November 2011. FAO is forecasting a record cereals harvest in Asia in 2012 at 1.196 billion tonnes, with increases in the outputs of maize, wheat and rice of 10.1 million tonnes, 7.6 million tonnes, and 5.3 million tonnes, respectively.

Happy holidays and best regards,
