Dear readers,
The January 2013 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU) reports that
India dethroned Thailand as the world’s leading rice exporter in 2012, but is not expected to export as much rice this year. For the first time in its history,
China has produced more maize than rice, as China’s people are consuming more meat and maize is used for animal feed.
Fears of a food price crisis eased on news that global food prices fell by 7 percent during 2012, with prices falling for the third consecutive month in December. Domestic food prices around the region were largely stable, with the exception
of a 4 percent rise in the price of meat in China.
