New FAO Database to monitor Greenhouse Gas Emissions

FAO has launched the FAOSTAT Emissions database of comprehensive time-series statistics on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from agriculture, forestry and other land use sectors for all countries, over the period 1990-2010.

The aim of FAOSTAT GHG dataset is to help countries assessing and reporting their GHG emissions and climate mitigation options from agriculture, reporting to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change at least biennially, starting at the end of 2014.

Quinoa: An ancient crop to contribute to world food security

United Nations have declared 2013 as the International Year of Quinoa<http://www.fao.org/quinoa-2013/en/>.

With its composition quinoa offers today a nutrient alternative to countries facing food insecurity. Indeed, quinoa is the only gluten-free crop that has all essential amino acids, trace elements and vitamins needed by the human body. It is a rich source for proteins, dietary fibers, as well as magnesium, phosphorus and iron.

Furthermore, quinoa has a remarkable adaptability to extreme agro-ecological conditions while it produces acceptable yields. There are more than three thousand varieties of quinoa both in cultivation and in the wild.

Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador are the main quinoa producers<http://faostat.fao.org/site/339/default.aspx>. Quinoa is typically harvested manually by small-scale farmers and their associations.
