Dear readers,

In the February 2013 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU), China strives to calm markets over its increased gain imports, while FAO raised its forecast for paddy production in Asia in 2012 by a modest 1.6 million tonnes or 0.9 percent. Robust output in China, Indonesia and Thailand drove the increase.

The Global Food Price Index was steady in January as a sharp rise in oils and fats prices cancelled out slight declines in cereals and sugar. In Viet Nam strong production and weak demand drove local rice prices down by 15 percent last month, while the Philippines said it hopes to export rice by the end of this year after a long period of being a rice importer.
