Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update:
Brief commentary:

 * International rice prices followed diverging directions in January 2013, depending on the types of rice and their origin. While the FAO All Rice Price Index was unchanged at its December 2012 value, indicating an overall stability, aromatic rice quotations increased, contrasting with a decline for Japonica rice. Prices of Indica moved up marginally.
 * From an origin perspective, prices tended to strengthen slightly in Thailand, India and the United States, but to soften in Viet Nam. They moved sideways in Pakistan.
 * Generally, rice quotations last month were higher than in January 2012, especially for Higher Quality Indica and Aromatic rice. Japonica rice prices were lower, confirming the easing of this market segment since September, amidst accrued competition from Australia, Egypt and the Russian Federation. Lower Quality Indica prices were only slightly higher than one year ago.

For more information on prices, you may wish to consult the International Commodity Price Database (http://www.fao.org/es/esc/prices/PricesServlet.jsp?lang=en&ccode=2311), which gives access to weekly prices of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100 % broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 1989 onwards. Monthly international and domestic prices for rice and other selected commodities in 81 countries are available through the Food Price Data and Analysis Tool (http://www.fao.org/giews/pricetool/).
