Hi All,

In our last update we tried to outline, at a high level, the structure and mode of operation of EIFAAC.   EIFAAC’s priority is to ensure that we meet the requirements of the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture sector; in order to achieve this ambition the support of you the National Focal Points is critical.   In an effort towards achievement of this goal I would like, in corporation with the Chairman of EIFAAC’s Technical and Scientific Committee (Teppo Vehanen), to provide information on how one can request advice or guidance from, or propose a project to, EIFAAC.

A project proposal can be developed by a member of EIFAAC, a donor, a partner organisation or an independent partner institution.  When we talk about projects in EIFAAC we simply mean that all our work, whether it is development of advice, research programmes or best practices guidance, is developed, managed and delivered through a project approach (activities are hence now called “projects”).  Project proposals are captured using a standard EIFAAC project template.  The proposal is reviewed to ensure that it is realistic and aligned to EIFAAC’s goals and objectives.  The EIFAAC Technical and Scientific Committee is the body that provides the expertise evaluation, monitoring and reporting on projects, but should also be seen as an expert group to support the project development.  The attached figure is intended to represent the role the EIFAAC Technical and Scientific Committee.

We are happy to report that EIFAAC currently has seven projects active, which includes transferred projects from the old EIFAC Working Parties (WP) and new projects.

Projects include:

-          Management/Threat of Aquatic Invasive Species in Europe

-          Developing advice on sustainable management actions on Cormorant populations

-          Towards the EIFAAC Symposium on Recreational Fishing

-          Development of Guidelines on the design of nature-like passes

-          Joint EIFAAC & ICES expert group advising on Eel

-          Ecohydropower project

-          Handling (welfare)of fishes in Aquaculture and Fisheries

There is one specific project that I would like to draw your attention to namely the Freshwater Invasives Networking for Strategy (FINs) Conference April 2013, which is bringing together a select group of invited International speakers to support the development of European policy on the issue of aquatic invasive species (please see: http://finsconference.ie/). Can I please request your support is circulating this link to the appropriate interested parties in your country at your earliest convenience as conference attendance numbers are restricted?

Please find attached a link providing a summary of the papers presented at the recent EIFAAC Symposium “Towards a responsible future in inland fisheries” held in Hämeenlinna, Finland: http://www.rktl.fi/www/uploads/EIFAAC/eifaac.pdf

Another recent publication titled “Methodologies for Assessing Socio-Economic Benefits of European Inland Recreational Fisheries”, which was officially endorsed at the EIFAAC 26th Session (2010) may be of interest to experts within your state, see the attached link: http://www.fao.org/docrep/013/i1723e/i1723e00.htm

The joint EIFAAC/ICES working group on Eel (WGEEL) 2012 report can now be downloaded from the ICES website at http://www.ices.dk/reports/ACOM/2012/WGEEL/wgeel_2012.pdf

Can I please request that the information provided in these updates is circulated to the relevant expert groups of scientist and managers within your country?  We would like to seek inputs/comments from these groups into existing and new projects. In this respect, please encourage, on your national level, exchange and communication with the EIFAAC TSC. But please also get back to the Management Committee with your comments or suggestions regarding the process of engaging national scientists/experts in EIFAAC work.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Kind regards,

Teppo & Cathal
