Food Security and Nutrition in the Post-2015 Development Agenda

Dear members of The World We Want,

We would like to update you on progress made on the subject of "hunger, food security and nutrition" in the post 2015 Development Agenda.

FAO & WFP-led Global Thematic Consultation

Less than 1000 days remain to the end of 2015, the target date for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). A number of processes have been put in place, both within and outside the United Nations system to accelerate progress towards the achievement of the MDG targets and to move towards a coherent set of goals beyond the MDGs.

Over the past six months, FAO and WFP, with the support of the Governments of Spain and Colombia, and in collaboration with IFAD, Bioversity International, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Food Security and Nutrition, led a Global Thematic Consultation. The aim was to collect views from the broadest spectrum of actors possible and to consolidate elements for an ambitious global vision on “Hunger, Food Security and Nutrition” in the Post 2015 Development Agenda.

Three-phased consultations

This consultation took place in three phases:

1.       An online consultation facilitated by the Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum) which received almost 300 contributions from a wide range of organizations worldwide, including governments, NGOs and CSOs, academia, professional bodies and interest groups, the private sector and individuals.

2.       A WFP-FAO convened informal consultation with stakeholders from the Committee on World Food Security who provided elements of a vision for food security and nutrition beyond 2015.

3.       A High level Consultation hosted by the Governments of Spain and Colombia in Madrid, where high level personalities from different sectors, drawing on results of previous steps, shaped a bold vision and necessary key elements for a food security and nutrition agenda in the Post 2015 development framework.

Two outcomes

Two documents summarize the outcomes of the consultations:

·         A Vision and Building Blocks for a Global Agenda” as a discussion document for the Madrid consultation.

·         A “Synthesis report of the High Level Consultation on Hunger, Food Security and Nutrition in the Post 2015 Development Framework” referred to as the Madrid Statement. The vision expressed in this document is gaining increased support from NGOs, CSOs, representatives of Governments and other institutions.

These documents, together with reports from other Global Thematic Consultations undertaken on various subjects, will provide inputs to: (1) the report of the High Level Panel of Eminent Persons convened by the UN Secretary General to advise him on a bold and at the same time practical development agenda beyond 2015; (2) the work of the UN Member States’ Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established as an outcome of Rio+20; and (3) the UN Secretary General’s report to the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly in September 2013.

What comes next

After the Madrid meeting a series of meetings with Member States and non-state actors have been organized to grant continuous support to the Madrid Statement and to disseminate the results of the consultation to the world community. State and non-state actors expressed their will in promoting the vision for the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition that emerged from the consultation with their constituencies and partners. They are actively engaging to disseminate the results and gain political support for a food and nutrition security agenda to be prominently reflected in the Post 2015 Framework. Activities and initiatives will be organized for future international events. This will include, among others, meetings of the Open Working Group, ECOSOC, the UN General Assembly and other international UN and intergovernmental meetings. The future initiatives will be featured on the FSN page and The World We Want website.
