Dear Readers, In the June 2013 issue of the Asia Pacific Food Situation Update (APFSU), Japan and South Korea have suspended imports of wheat from the United States after the discovery of genetically modified wheat on an Oregon farm. Farmers in the Fukushima region of Japan have begun planting rice again following the nuclear accident of 2011. Rice exports from Cambodia are on the rise, while Indonesia is grappling with food price inflation. Global Food Prices fell marginally in May on lower dairy and sugar prices. Strong exports and government procurement programmes kept domestic prices around the region stable even as food supplies increased on good harvests. Beginning July 2013, the APFSU in its current form will be discontinued and renewed under a new publication titled - Asia-Pacific Food Price and Policy Monitor. It is assured to readers that the new report will cover the scope of the current APFSU and will further incorporate elements of our sister report - the AP Weekly Price Monitor.
