Agricultural investments raise women's income and improve lives

Land-related investments in agriculture can greatly impact rural people's lives. Four FAO studies in Ghana<http://www.fao.org/docrep/018/aq535e/aq535e.pdf>, Lao PDR<http://www.fao.org/docrep/017/aq293e/aq293e.pdf>, Tanzania<http://www.fao.org/docrep/016/ap433e/ap433e.pdf> and Zambia<http://www.fao.org/docrep/018/aq536e/aq536e.pdf> conclude that women's livelihoods were improved when women's participation in agricultural land-related investments had increased. Even more beneficiaries were found as the women invested the additional income in their children's health and education and food for the family. The beneficiary women said they were playing a stronger role in household decision-making and community initiatives.

Three more countries provide improved access to their statistics with CountrySTAT

CountrySTAT is a statistical information system capable of managing food and agriculture data originating from a variety of national sources. In July 2013, three new CountrySTAT systems were launched in Burundi<http://www.fao.org/economic/ess/ess-capacity/countrystathome/burundilaunch/en/>, Guinea-Bissau<http://www.fao.org/economic/ess/ess-capacity/countrystathome/guinea-bisau/en/> and Gambia<http://www.fao.org/economic/ess/ess-capacity/countrystathome/gambia-launch/en/>. CountrySTAT approach ensures long-term sustainability by developing the capacities of regional and national experts, and is constantly evolving in order to better match the users' needs. Plans include real-time and forecast-data relevant to agriculture and the use of mobile technologies and Geographic Information Systems for data collection.
