v GBEP at EUSEW showcases the development opportunities of bioenergy
At the European Parliament in Brussels on 24 June, as part of EU Sustainable Energy Week 2013, GBEP and PANGEA organised the event “Ensuring Access to Sustainable Bioenergy Globally”. Along with representatives from GBEP and PANGEA, the event saw a mixture of speakers from both private and public sectors, to give a well-balanced, evidence-based forum in which sustainable bioenergy, and its opportunities and challenges, could be discussed.
GBEP held in Berlin last 29 and 30 May the 4th meeting of its Working Group on Capacity Building for Sustainable Bioenergy (WGCB) and the 15th meeting of the Steering Committee. The meetings were preceded by the Policy Forum “Opportunities for Sustainable Bioenergy Development: National Experiences and Global Exchange”, held on 28 May 2013 in Berlin, organized by GIZ (German Academy for International Cooperation, in collaboration with the GBEP.
What share of a country's energy mix can be supplied by renewable energy? Where are the resources located? What is the most cost-effective combination of technologies? What volume of investment does this represent and is there a market large enough to create a supply chain? Assessing renewable energy resources is the firsts step in answering these questions and eventually creating an enabling market environment for deploying renewable energy investments. The Global Renewable Energy Atlas initiative, operated by IRENA, means to respond to these crucial questions by providing a comprehensive information platform on the potential of renewable energy.
The High Level of Experts of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS) published last June its Report on Biofuels and Food Security, in response to the request of the CFS on October 2011 to “conduct a science-based comparative literature analysis taking into consideration the work produced by the FAO and Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) of the positive and negative effects of biofuels on food security”.
