By way of inspiration, here's an article on the promotion of World School Milk Day in the United Kingdom. Michael World School Milk Day gains strength in numbers Over 150 MPs have swapped the Commons for the classroom to help thousands of children from Inverness to St Ives celebrate school milk by acting as milk monitor for the day. MPs including Yvette Cooper, MP for Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford and Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities and Danny Alexander, MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey and Chief Secretary to the Treasury, handed out milk to children at their local primary and nursery schools between 26th September and 30th November. The visits were organised by Cool Milk to help raise awareness of the importance of the nursery milk scheme and to celebrate World School Milk Day 2012 (26th September). Mr Alexander said: ""It was fantastic to see so many youngsters enjoying their milk. "World Schools Milk Day can play a big part in spreading the message about the nutritional value of milk in a fun way to growing children." In theUK, an estimated 1.5 million children receive free milk every day, with about 40 per cent supplied by intermediaries or through teaching staff making arrangements with local retailers. WorldSchoolMilk Day is organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations to promote the importance of drinking milk at school to children in a fun and educational way. In the UK World School Milk Day is funded by Cool Milk, one of the country's leading school milk suppliers. SPPA's Chief Exective,Ian McLaughlan, said: "The Scottish Pre-school Play Association (SPPA) supports the World School Milk Day initiative. SPPA believes that it is important to raise awareness of the day and to celebrate the nursery school milk scheme and school milk programmes across the world." Cool Milk's Managing Director John Sedgwick explained: "Cool Milk has funded World School Milk Day in theUKfor the past eight years and we were delighted so many MPs took part in this year's celebrations. "Last year 88 MPs volunteered to act as milk monitors for the day at their local school or nursery but this year 153 have given up their time to celebrate school milk which demonstrates how vitally important the scheme is." Discussion on starting both these days took place on the FAO e-fora in June and July 2000; arising out of this, it was decided to hold the first World School Milk Day in September 2000 (last Wednesday of the month) and the first World Milk Day the following June (2001). Background information on World School Milk Day can be found at: http://www.fao.org/economic/est/est-commodities/dairy/school-milk/14th-world-school-milk-day-wsmd/en/ In order to provide inspiration for planning celebrations, here is a summary of last year's events: http://www.fao.org/fileadmin/templates/est/COMM_MARKETS_MONITORING/Dairy/Documents/WSMD_2012.pdf As with World Milk Day, the large number and wide geographic distribution of countries celebrating World School Milk Day illustrate its universal appeal. Send us news of your planned celebrations, so that we can circulate them to the List and perhaps spur others to follow your example.
