Subject: FAO Rice Price Update - August 2013 - #EST-CA-BASIC-FOOD

Dear Subscriber,
We are pleased to send you the new issue of the FAO Rice Price Update:
Brief commentary:

ˇ The FAO All Rice Price Index (2002-2004=100) remained little changed in July at a value of 241 points. Quotations of high quality Indica and aromatic varieties registered small declines during the month, but a sustained strengthening of Japonica prices compensated for their retreat.

ˇ Export prices followed different trends in the major origins during July. They weakened further in Thailand, as low buying interest and a depreciating Baht continued to exert downward pressure, with anticipation of government stock sales in latter part of the month also contributing to the decline. Notwithstanding tight availabilities, a depreciating currency also led prices in Pakistan to soften, whereas the official purchase drive provided support to quotations in Viet Nam. Prices also tended to strengthen in India, but they varied in the United States according to quality.

ˇ Based on the Index, rice export prices in the first seven months of the year stood 1.7 percent above values in the corresponding period in 2012, sustained by higher fragrant rice quotations.
For more information on prices, you may wish to consult the International Commodity Price Database http://www.fao.org/economic/est/statistical-data/est-cpd/en/, which gives access to weekly prices of major traded products, including the high quality Thai white rice 100% B and the 100 % broken rice Thai A1 Super, from 1989 onwards. Monthly international and domestic prices for rice and other selected commodities in 82 countries are available through the Food Price Data and Analysis Tool (http://www.fao.org/giews/pricetool/).
